3. Ise Grand Shrine

The Ise Grand Shrine which is located in Japan is considered arguably one of the most sacred, holiest and important places in Japan. Honorable Mention:
S-4 (Sector Four)

Yes, this is to do with Area 51. The site came to public attention in 1989 when Bob Lazar stated that he had worked there, studying UFOs. Lazar claims the installation contains nine hangars featuring nine different-shaped crafts. Excellent list! :D Added to StumbleUpon.
Great read, keep em comming.
Shockingly you can go to RAF Menwith Hill, the waiting list is about 2 years and it's organsied groups only but you can still book a visit.
2 years to see James Bonds stuff :) I think it's worth the wait.
That "last resort" place is run by FEMA?
Good to know we've got our top people on it.
Shouldn't take more than 3-4 months to get everyone safely inside in the event of armageddon. >.>
You forgot to add my house to the list.
I'll never let any of you inside.
Besides, you don't know where it is!
I have been to club 33! Wow and it made your list.
I've been to Menwith Hill! They have a bowling alley and everything is crazy cheap. Some of the people who work there live in my town.
Kooklah!!!!!! I LOVE this list!
I was so excited to see Club-33 on here, though, you don't necessarily have to be a member to get in, you just need to now one, that's how I got in. It was pure amazing, and definitely a check on my bucket list.
So how does the shrine get rebuilt if no one can come in?
Fort Knox anyone??
It was a better list when it wasn't plagiarised from Listverse. Thumbs down.
Don't forget the alleged resting place of the Ark of the Covenant in Ethiopia:
http://www.robertcornuke.com/image-galleries/ark-covenant
I have seen RAF Merri Hill.
The one with the big domes. For some reason my dad drove up the road to it in our rather large looking camper van. This guy was standing there with an M16 staring us down, anohter one cam emout of the guardhouse. I was like "DAD TURN THE F*** AROUND!!!!" Then he thought he should turn round.
I swear, I almost grabbed the wheel myself.
He is fail.
This really is a good list, with but a single exception: RAF Menwith Hill. From where I'm sitting, it seems to me that any place that I've actually been in shouldn't be included. Anyone in the British or US armed services AND their family members can come and go from Menwith Hill. Sure, you have to be in (or married to or born of someone in) the military but compared to having to be a priest AND a member of the royal family of japan to see the inside of the Ise Shrine? Not even remotely comparable.
But I repeat - really interesting and engaging post!
I am a military family member and I went to RAF Menwith Hill. No special security required for us. Just the usual ID card etc.
I made it to Mount Weather. They keep it locked up tight. If they caught you with a paper drawing that even looked like a map of the facility you could be arrested.
Very good, for Truth-seekers see www.disclose.tv
Enjoy GunZenBomZ
I've had dinner at whites. And I'm just some lousy American college kid! =P
IVE BEEN TO ONE OF THEM! Mt. Weather located near winchester, va is where my mom works... every year they have a "bring your kid to work day" and i went for all of them.. the only stipulation is you must be under 18.. they do tours and demonstrations..
I've been to Menwith Hills, and Im in neither the US or UK military, fair enough the people that took us there worked there, but we went for a birthday party and bowling :)
I've been to West Wokkington Falls Aluminum Storm Door Co. and Dairy Queen site and lived to tell about it. Soooo boring.
Stumbled from CT
I live probably 15 miles from Mount Weather. Weird place. A friend's mom works there and never says anything about it.
What a fantastic list. I live nowhere near any of those but..... I can see a few family holidays coming on!!
I too have been to Menwith Hill, as a dependent of an Air Force service member. You can go pretty much anywhere on the base, but Menwith Hill is very similar to the "other" eaves dropping base RAF Croughton, where the real stuff is underground. CIA, NSA, Military Intel!!!
I lived in Menwith Hill from age 7 to 11, I had no idea that was what was going on there.
Actually, you can go into the Ise Grand Shrine. As you mentioned, it's rebuilt every 20 years, however the old one is left standing until the new one is complete, so up until the new shrine is consecrated, the old one is still in use. Because of that, they allow tourists in the new one until it is consecrated. Once it is consecrated, however, it is off limits.
Dan Brown's writing isn't "junk"... it's simply fiction
technically I COULD go to a lot of these places. I just might be a member of club 33 or work for the government out at Area 51. If only the emperor can go into the shrine, how do they keep rebuilding it, does the emperor have to rebuild it? With that aside, awesome post! I hadn't heard of a lot of those places!
LoL The white gentleman's club seems pretty lame. Faggots.
I live close to Mt Weather. You should've been in the area around 9/11. Secret Service EVERYWHERE.
nice list but id add "Pine gap" in australia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Gap
Lots of people asking about how they rebuild the Grand Shrine at Ise if only Imperials can go inside.
Everything at the Grand Shrine, from the entrance bridge, to the torii, to the shrine building to the fence around the shrine building are rebuilt on an adjacent site, immediately beside the current incarnation. When the new one is finished, there's a ceremony where someone allowed into the currently consecrated shrine (the old one) transfers the relics to the newly built one, and consecrates the new one. Until that time, anyone could have been in there, cuz it was just a building, but when the relics move in, it's becomes the new Shrine, and access is limited. Then, the old shrine and bridge and fence and torii are dismantled.
You can actually go TO the Grand Shrine at Ise, but you can't enter the main building, where the relics are kept. You can approach the fence though, pray as you would at any other shrine, take a peek through to see the building, and then move on.
menwith hill ain't that unaccessable! I've got mates who work on the base and get signed in all the time. I've bad a burger from the Burger King on base!
My kids went to halloween there last year - it was amazing!!
I think I've got a lot less chance of getting into Club 33
It didn't used to be too tough to go to the Club 33. In the late 70's Disney Vice Presidents were automatically members, and some of them would let their employees make reservations on their memberships. As a result we used to go often. It's a well run high end restaurant with a good wine list. They used to put your name in gold lettering on the matchbooks waiting at your table!
My mom has been into Club 33 through her work.
I work at Menwith Hill. True, you can go on Menwith Hill as long as you military or military family. But to get to the mission part of it, you have to have a Top Secret Clearance, among other things. So don't post about things unless you know what you're talking about.
Great article, but maybe a grammar check is in order? Especially relative clauses.
These are just the one's they let you know about. It's just the tip of the iceburg.
Menwith Hills... yeah you cannot go into it but you can go over it - as Mark Thomas has shown @
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwHRrb5G-QI
Please don't forget The tomb of Qin Shi Huang. It's the tomb of the chinese emperor who had the terracotta army built, which hasn't even been opened yet! Rumours of rivers of mercury ring true from tests done in the ground. Also rumours of treasures and riches.
http://www.ibiblio.org/chinesehistory/contents/02cul/c03s01.html
I hope they open it within my lifetime!
Great list by the way!
Mt Weather isn't really that inaccessible and isn't nearly as impressive as some of the other sites in the surrounding areas around DC.
Also added to the list should be Camp David, NSA building at Ft. Meade, MD, Raven Rock mountain, and Sugar Hill Naval annex just to name a few.
Mt Weather is the one everyone knows about. lol
I didn't know about Mt Weather until I saw this list. :D
I've been round a lot of RAF Menwith Hill, including a lot of the Secure parts. I was in RAF cadets, and they took us on this huge guided tour, talking us through various operations and dragging us into those "golf balls" which are just huge satellite dishes. We had to be accompanied by site officials and some M.O.D police chaps.
You are absolutely right Wayne. The "alleged" resting place of the Ark of the Covenant in Axum, Ethiopia should have been added.
Thanks guys, updated the list.
Excellent List! Very good spots!
This was absolutely fascinating, from the bare facts all the way down to the numerous typos.
Haha, I've been in Club 33. XD
I've been to Menwith Hill. It's really a crappy little base, but the folks that work there are quite friendly...at least the ones I dealt with, both Brits and Yanks.
HA i win. Ive been to Menwith Hill and Club 33. should be the top 8 places
I like this site.
I have another place that is not far from where I live that is also limited entry to the "tower" Bok Tower to be exact.
Here is the website, if you'd like to put it here also.
It is located in Lake Wales Florida.
http://www.boktowergardens.org/the-tower
I was lucky enough to eat at Club 33 a few years back and I must say that it was a very special experience!
Great read Sarah, built in 1928... wow I can't imagine the tools that they used back then. Since I was born in 1987 things seem so much easier these days.
i dont want to go anywhere in this list anyway
What a great list. I've been to Club 33 like many have. I must not have appreciated how tough it was to get into back then. It was just ok.
I wish I could see the inside of Area51... oh man!

Found 01/20/2010 via StumbleUpon! Thank you! That was a great read!
Mariana Trench should be on this list
Perhaps you can't go inside the shrine itself, but I have definitely been to the grounds of the Grand Shrine at Ise. You can even pray there, in the Japanese sense, as there is a publicly open place to offer money and announce your presence to the gods. It is forbidden to take pictures once you enter through that last gate though.
Well thanks very much for letting me see how poor my life is that I will never get to go to these places but not sure if I am upset that I cant go there or that you told me they existed lol
the way you talk about the Vatican Secret Archives is pretty pathetic. As if the only stuff you could find there were secrets or drama, instead of appreciating the art displayed on the walls by instance. Clearly your mind is small enough and cannot see further, or you are just one of those who will do anything to get readers attention instead of informing correctly and wisely.
the rest is very nice.
Air Force One...?
I've been lucky enough to get into club 33, 3 times now :)
Club 33 was amazing and I was lucky enough to have gone twice. Loved the list!
you forgot the skull and cross bones
I loves this liste so mush,
http://techno-web-marketing.blogspot.com
What about hangar 18? Its at Wright Patterson Airforce Base in Ohio. Of course it isnt confirmed if its real but its supposedly is more top secret than area 51
finally a list of places you can't go to.
Kyllähän noihin pääsee, jos vain haluaa!
Ihan turha lista.
Sama kuin minä kertoisin 10 parasta elokuvaa, jotka ovat siis minun mielestä parhaita.
How about the olson twins pants?
Someone said fort knox, well we had a TV crew in ther Mr. didn't do their homework.
The Vatican Secret archives aren't really that secret. You can visit them online. There is a link to it on the home page of the Vatican website. You can go on a very intersting virtual tour through that link.
The archives contain many old and delicate documents. That's why access is limited. But thousands of researchers do go to the archives every year.
Silly woo-woo drama about the Vatican Secret Archives (cue spooky music). In truth, qualified scholars with legitimate research needs are routinely admitted.
Special Operations Command at Ft. Bragg NC. Just a cinder block building on the base.
I don't care if this list was stolen or even totally fabricated; it's the most interesting thing I've read this week. If it is real, I too will add "SEE ONE OF THESE PLACES" to my bucket list
Stumbled from NY...this is a really interesting list.
Sorry to dissappoint you, but Metro-2 is just an urban legend. There really are a few military tunnels under Moscow, but they did not even reach completion because of 1991 events.
Sorry to dissappoint you, but Metro-2 is just an urban legend. There are just few military tunnels, but they did not even completed them because of 1991 events.
How bout Delta Force Compound at Ft. Bragg?
I have been to all of them and many not listed. Those are too secret...
I'd add Jessica Alba's bedroom.
Why are most of these places called "secret" when everyone knows about it?!
what about skull and bones at Yale University?
Roosevelt Roads Military Base in Puerto Rico...It is the underground nuclear sub military base about 10 stories below the earth. Check it out!
You don't die from cataracts.
jedi_korran is a munky, only people who been there can disclaim this info, you know like the people who were at the twin towers on 9/11, they can disclaim untruthful claims, but so far, all this info is accurate, and lots of commenters feel they know more, but theyre about as smart as their president
aaron is a fag
dana is the daughter of some rich cousin of a studio company owner, why is she saying anything?
Jules is a fuckin moron, lotta people been to menwith hill, maybe theyre rich dummies
i am in possession of a copy of "Special Operations Manual 1-01" from S-4 (Sector 4)
